Is Heart Valve Surgery Always Necessary for a Leaking Heart Valve?

Fortunately for people suffering from a leaking heart valve, this condition does not always mean a heart valve surgery. Furthermore, the term heart valve surgery also does not always imply that every time this is mentioned, it means an open heart surgery.

As a matter of fact, most of the people suffering from the disorder of a leaking valve are totally unaware of the condition. The reason behind this is that in most of the cases, the leaking valve only remains in a mild condition and does not even reach the point where it requires medical attention. This leaves most of the cases unnoticed.

Valve regurgitation, also the medical term for a leaking heart valve, has various symptoms via which one can notice their presence and react in time. The most common symptoms are unexplained fatigue, heart palpitations, the shortness of breath (especially when you are exercising), regular awareness of your heart beats, irregular and fluttery heart beat, angina (also medically referred to as chest pain), fainting or dizziness, and swollen feet or ankles.

The heart valves in the body function to help move the blood in one direction through the heart. In situation where there is a valve leak, the leaflets of the valves fail to close properly, allowing some of the blood to be regurgitated in the backward direction, which is actually wrong.

Also, in cases where valve regurgitation or valve leakage is quite severe, the heart is required to work much harder in an attempt to re-pump the lost blood back through the heart and into the body. This extra work done by the heart eventually results in heart enlargement.

f you have started to notice that the regular activities that you were doing normally in the past have started to tire you out, and you are experiencing one or more than anyone of the symptoms mentioned above, it is recommended that you visit your doctor or a cardiologist at the earliest.

There are people who feel exhausted by just walking to the mailbox in their drive, while there are others who suffer from chest pain even when they bend to pick up some clothes from the dryer, while in some cases wherein people experience breathlessness just by standing in the heat. All these and more similar signs could possibly suggest that you are suffering from a leaking heart valve.

It is important to have your check up done soon in case you encounter anyone of these symptoms.
